Sooch Village for Children

Visitors and the press gather outside the administration building at the grand opening of Sooch Village in March 2008.

Sooch Village is a community of twenty free-standing cottages, situated just outside of the city of Ranchi, which is the capital city of the Indian state of Jharkhand. Sooch Village is currently home to over ninety children and will eventually house over 200 children. Most of the orphans are under six-years old, including twenty orphans born in the last eight months. Sooch Village opened in March 2008 and that opening is shown in the fantastic short film, One Child at a Time.

Each of the twenty cottages at Sooch Village houses ten orphans and is staffed by one house mother. It is this intimate, family environment that allows our children to receive love and individual attention, which very difficult to achieve in a traditional orphanage. Each cottage has its own kitchen and bathrooms, which further reinforces our philosophy of the family environment.

Much of the state of Jharkhand is covered by forest and the area surrounding Sooch Village is no exception. A snapshot of the land around Sooch Village includes pockets of trees, massive rock formations jutting out of the ground, and hazy mountains in the far distance.

Local tribal villagers, working mainly in the nearby rock quarries, are an essential part of the landscape as well. Tribals work in these rock quarries and most make about $2 a day doing this back breaking work.  Because the work is so grueling, most of them can only work 4-5 days per week.  One-third of Jharkhand's population is tribal people and The Miracle Foundation receives many of its orphans from the small, tribal villages in the area.

Sooch Village also includes a massive soccer/cricket field and an acre-size garden. The diet served to the children is vegetarian, which allows the children of Sooch Village to eat food that is grown almost entirely in the village.

The children of Sooch Village are the lucky orphans of India. They enjoy a great life, receive an excellent education, regular health care and tons of love and support. The children of this home are highly educated and motivated to break the cycle of poverty which is clear all around them.
