Bhawani Home for Children

Children playing in front of the Bhawani Home.

The Bhawani Home for Children, taken over by The Miracle Foundation in March 2007, is located a few miles outside the city of Jharsuguda in the state of Orissa, India. It houses and nurtures approximately 200 children. The home is also a school and most of the children are between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. Also, most of the children at the Bhawani home are not actually orphans but children of parents from the surrounding villages that are too poor to properly care for them.

There are about fifty children from the surrounding villages who come to the orphanage each day to attend school and receive two meals. This service is provided for free to the local villagers by The Miracle Foundation and is called the Lunch & Learn Program. It is designed for children with parents that would normally be left in an orphanage. Since we keep, feed, educate, and take care of the children during the day, both parents can work and make a living. In exchange for this free daycare and education, parents agree by contract to keep their children in school for as long as the program exists.

During the summer of 2008, the once dilapidated Bhawani orphanage building was given a much needed facelift.

A new roof was constructed; proper electrical wiring was installed; and mortar was spread over what once were only bricks supporting the orphanage structure.

The dirt floor was paved with concrete, providing a much cleaner and cooler place for the children to eat and play.

Currently, the children of the Bhawani home live and attend school in the same building. Due to the generosity of Miracle Foundation donors and Austin Ventures, a new children's village will be built in Rourkela and will serve as home to the children currently living at our Rourkela home, as well as the orphans from Bhawani.

The children of this home are highly educated and motivated to break the cycle of poverty which is clear all around them. We invite you to come and meet them. They are guaranteed to change your life.
