How Sangeeta Kept Her Family Together

When Sangeeta’s husband passed away, everything changed. Suddenly, she was a single mother with no stable income and no permanent home. Living in a tribal village in Jharkhand, India, she did whatever she could to support her 9-year-old son, Ravi, picking up housework for neighbors, but that brought in the equivalent of just a few dollars a day.

Ravi was thriving in 4th grade, but Sangeeta was struggling to provide for him. For families like Sangeeta’s, the barriers are steep. With no income and no proof of residence, Sangeeta couldn’t access basic government support.

That’s where the Miracle Foundation and our partner came in.

After meeting with Sangeeta and hearing her story, we knew we couldn’t wait. The team acted quickly, connecting her to a local partner who was able to help her access government services more easily. There, Sangeeta applied for a housing program for vulnerable families like hers. With support from the team, her application was approved. The foundation for her new home was laid, literally and figuratively.

But we didn’t stop at housing.

Ravi was enrolled in a sponsorship program, receiving ₹4,000 or $47 a month to support his school fees, supplies, and other essentials. And Sangeeta began receiving parenting support and practical coaching to help her explore sustainable income options like raising livestock and gardening.

Today, she’s not only earning, but also leading. Sangeeta is now part of a group organized by the Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society. Through this group, she’s building connections with other women, gaining confidence, and accessing more tools to secure her family’s future.

A simple house. A chance to stay in school. A mother, seen and supported.

This is what family strengthening looks like. And it’s working.

Because no mother should ever have to be separated from their child, and every child deserves a family.
