As Chief Marketing Officer of Austin-based tech startup OJO Labs, Karen Starns has a track record building sustainable brands, leading product marketing, driving customer acquisition and engagement, and developing high-impact global growth strategies.
Karen’s expertise in leading high-performing teams and solving complex marketing problems comes from a successful career helping build some of the world’s biggest brands. Her past roles include two stints at Amazon including Head of Brand and Customer Experience for Devices, SVP of Global Marketing at Pearson, and General Manager of Bing Consumer Marketing at Microsoft, the culmination of her 13-year tenure with the company.
A marketer and a technologist, Karen is skilled in building brands that people love and can’t live without. At OJO, Karen champions the company’s purpose to level the playing field for all homebuyers and sellers so that everyone has what they need to own a home.
She is an active mentor of women and young leaders, including two award-winning women CEOs leading social enterprises that are changing the landscape of their communities. Karen is a mentor to the CEO of Cielo Hammocks, a social enterprise in Yucatan, Mexico that helps preserve traditional Mayan weaving techniques and break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. She also mentors the CEO of Sosai Renewable Energies, a company addressing the issues of poverty and rural community development in Nigeria by providing access to renewable energy and cultivating women entrepreneurs.
Karen is a Lecturer at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. She is also the Advisory Council Chair-Elect for the Master of Science in Marketing program. With deep Longhorn roots, Karen attended The University of Texas at Austin where she earned a BBA in Marketing,
